Ear infections: Low cost Home Treatments that work

Ear infections are one of the most common health issues dogs face — and one of the most manageable at home when caught early. The key is identifying which type you’re dealing with before reaching for a remedy, because the wrong cleaner can make things worse.

Jovi, our resident dog at Marley Pet Sanctuary, has dealt with both types. Here’s exactly what we’ve learned treating him through real-world experience.

Ear Infections — How to Identify and Treat

The hardest part of treating a dog ear infection at home isn’t the treatment — it’s knowing which infection you’re dealing with. Bacterial or yeast?

Ear mites are a third possibility — less common in adult dogs but worth ruling out before you start any treatment, because the approach is different again. A dog with ear mite infection will most probably shake it’s head and show some red irritated skin.

Most owners reach for whatever ear cleaner is on hand — or whatever worked last time. The problem is that the two most common ear infection types need opposite approaches.

  • Apple cider vinegar is effective against yeast — but applied to a bacterial infection with broken or inflamed skin, it causes irritation and can worsen the infection.
  • Chlorhexidine is safe for both — but using it alone when yeast is the primary issue means you’re missing the antifungal treatment the infection actually needs.

This is why the identification step isn’t optional. Spend two minutes checking the discharge before you do anything else.

The home treatment solutions that we recommend from our sanctuary experience work for most cases. So far we were able to treat all ear infections ourselves. However. If you don’t see any improvement in 3-5 days we highly recommend to visit the vet for check-up.

Not sure which type your dog has? Use this table to identify it before you treat.

💡  The Texture Test — Your Fastest Field Check

Rub a tiny amount of discharge between your fingers.

Yeast: sticky and paste-like.  |  Bacterial: thicker, crusts at the edges.  |  Ear mites: dry and crumbles apart like fine dark dirt.

If you can only check one thing, check the texture.

Treating A Yeast ear infection

Start by diluting apple cider vinegar 50/50 with water. Use a soft cosmetic tissue to gently wipe the visible inner ear flap, then dip a Q-tip in the solution and carefully clear any visible waxy discharge from the outer canal entrance. Always work outward — the goal is to lift discharge out, not push it deeper. Never insert the Q-tip beyond what you can clearly see.

Let the ear air dry for about 15 minutes.

Once dry, draw roughly a half inch of clotrimazole cream into a small syringe and deposit it just inside the ear canal opening. Apply a small amount around the inner ear with your fingertip, then massage gently from the outside to help it work in.

Clotrimazole is highly effective against yeast — most dogs clear up within a few days. Follow this routine for 3 days, then watch for any new brown, waxy discharge. If the ear stays clean, you’re done.

Treating a bacterial ear infection

Start by diluting Chlorohexidine 50/50 with water.

Once dry, draw the recommended number of Zymox Otic drops into the ear canal opening. Apply a small amount around the inner ear with your fingertip, then massage gently from the outside to help the drops distribute evenly.

Zymox Otic is highly effective against bacterial infections — most dogs show clear improvement within a few days. Follow this routine for 7 days, then watch for any new yellow discharge or crusting.

Bacterial infections take longer to clear than yeast — in our experience at Marley Pet Sanctuary, consistency is everything. Keep treating every day and give it the full treatment window, even if the ear starts looking better early.

Cholorhexidine (keep this in your Pantry)

Chlorhexidine is one of the most versatile and affordable antiseptics you can own — effective against bacteria, yeast, and fungus, it works equally well on wounds, hot spots, and skin irritation, not just ears.

Zymox Otic drops

Zymox Otic is a veterinary-grade ear treatment that works against bacterial, yeast, and fungal infections without a prescription. At the Marley Pet Sanctuary we achieved the best results when cleaning with Chlorohexidine first.

Jovi's Case: Why We Added Chlorhexidine to the Otic Routine

We initially tried Zymox Otic on its own, as it’s marketed as self-cleaning — meaning the drops are supposed to dissolve and lift discharge without manual cleaning.

With Jovi, the discharge wasn’t clearing on its own. So we added a Chlorhexidine cleaning step first to manually remove the buildup, then applied the Otic drops.

The combination made a significant difference. His ears are now almost fully healed.

Lesson: self-cleaning ear products work well for maintenance, but if there’s already significant discharge present, manual cleaning first is likely needed.

Treating ear mites

Ear mites in dogs look like dark coffee ground

Ear mites (Otodectes cynotis) are tiny parasites that live in the ear canal and feed on skin debris. They are highly contagious between animals and more common in puppies and dogs that have contact with cats, but any dog can get them.

Clean the ear with mineral oil and diluted apple cider vinegar.

Once clean, apply enough Virbac Otomite Plus drops to wet the ear canal, then massage gently at the base of the ear to distribute the solution.

Repeat daily for the first week, then every other day for a second week — ear mite eggs hatch over a 3-week cycle and must be addressed through multiple rounds of treatment.

Ear mites spread easily between animals. If one pet in your household has them, all pets need to be treated simultaneously — even if the others show no symptoms.
